Clermont's Historic Rural and River Town Tour – This unique tour gives you insights into the people and places that shaped the history of the Ohio Valley.  From President Grant's Birthplace to homes on the Underground Railroad, Clermont has a powerful history that helped influenced our Nation.  

Sample Itinerary:

Day 1

  • Begin your journey along the Ohio River at the Ross Gowdy House Museum The house was built about 1853 during New Richmond’s most prosperous era of steamboat manufacturing. The museum overlooks the Ohio River and includes river memorabilia, artifacts, antiques and a craft shop.
  • Explore the picturesque Historic New Richmond: Rivertown. River Village ShoppeCardboard Boat Museum
  • Enjoy lunch at Front Street Cafe, a quaint café & gallery bistro set along the banks of the Ohio River.
  • Tour President U.S. Grant’s Birthplace, Civil War general and two-term president of the United States. See how the Grant family established themselves in southern Ohio in the early 19th century and hear the fascinating story of the house and how it traveled in Ohio until its return to Point Pleasant.
  • Continue along the River to Chilo: Living & Working on the Ohio River Museum  The Chilo Lock 34 River Museum occupies the former operations building at the Ohio River Lock and Dam #34.  The museum offers an interactive glimpse into the history of steamboats, floods and working and living on the river.
  • Visit the John Parker House  Professionally designed exhibits depict and communicate the historical context in which Parker and his courageous contemporaries influenced and shaped the history of the mid-Ohio Valley.  John Rankin House At this National Historic Landmark, you can step inside one of the best-documented and most active Underground Railroad “stations” in Ohio and get the story of Ohio’s role in the abolitionist movement that set the stage for the end of slavery as well as the modern Civil Rights movement. 
  • End your day at Meranda-Nixon Winery, located in an area of the Ohio Valley that was one of the largest grape growing regions in the country during the 1800s.
