Ohio Chautauqua comes to New Richmond June 26-30
The five-day cultural event is free to the public
NEW RICHMOND, Oh. — New Richmond has been selected once again as one of the four communities in the state to host Ohio Chautauqua 2018. The five-day, free event runs from June 26-30 and combines living history performances, music, education and participation in a one-of-a-kind cultural event for the entire community.
“The combination of history, music and education, make the Ohio Chautauqua living history performances truly unique,” said Jeff Blom, President of the Clermont County Convention & Visitors Bureau. “Visitors to Clermont County and local residents will truly enjoy these shows! And with five days of performances, there are several opportunities to catch one or more.”
Presented by the Ohio Humanities, Ohio Chautauqua has free performances beginning at 7:30 daily in the large tent located at the Village Bandstand and Susanna Park at 116 Susanna. Live local music will start at 6:30 p.m.
Daytime activities are also set, featuring performances for adult audiences and hands-on workshops for youth in the library.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the annual tour and will celebrate the “Modern Legends” Erma Bombeck, Cesar Chavez, Betty Friedan, Benjamin O. Davis Jr., and Roberts Francis Kennedy. The program showcases these historical figures from the mid-twentieth century.
“Ohio Chautauqua is a great opportunity to show off our beautiful historic river town,” said New Richmond’s Administrator, Greg Roberts. “Ohio Humanities, the producers of Ohio Chautauqua, recognize that there is world-wide interest from heritage tourists in places like New Richmond. Chautauqua is just one way of celebrating our historic heritage and sharing it with the world.”
Chautauqua assemblies started back in 1874, and quickly expanded throughout rural America bringing speakers, teachers, musicians and entertainers to communities.
Ohio Humanities established Ohio Chautauqua in 1999 as part of its mission to help individuals and communities explore, share, and be inspired by history and culture. The tour now travels to four different towns in Ohio each summer.
